Wisdom Tooth Removal
Wisdom Tooth Removal Post-Operative Instructions
Congratulations on taking the first step towards better mouth health by having your wisdom teeth removed. To ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery, please carefully review the following post-surgery instructions. If you have any questions or worries, please feel free to contact our office for help.
Bleeding: It is normal to experience some bleeding after wisdom tooth removal. To control bleeding, gently bite down on clean gauze pads placed over the removal sites for about 30 minutes. Replace the gauze pads as needed until bleeding stops.
Pain Control: You may experience mild to moderate discomfort after the numbing wears off. Take any prescribed pain medications as directed by your oral surgeon. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can also help reduce discomfort. Avoid aspirin as it can increase bleeding.
Swelling: Swelling is common after wisdom tooth removal and usually peaks within 48 hours. Apply an ice pack or cold compress to the affected area for 20 minutes on, then 20 minutes off, to help reduce swelling and discomfort.
Diet: Stick to a soft or liquid diet for the first few days after surgery to avoid irritating the removal sites. Choose nutritious foods such as soups, smoothies, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs. Avoid hot, spicy, or hard foods that may cause irritation.
Mouth Hygiene: Maintain good mouth hygiene to promote healing and prevent infection. Gently brush your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush, being careful to avoid the removal sites. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt dissolved in a cup of water) several times a day to keep the area clean.
Activity: Limit physical activity and avoid strenuous exercise for the first few days after surgery to minimize swelling and discomfort. Rest as much as possible and avoid bending over or lifting heavy objects.
Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Refrain from smoking or using tobacco products for at least 72 hours after surgery, as they can hinder healing and increase the risk of problems. Avoid alcohol consumption during the healing period as well.
Follow-up Appointment: Attend your scheduled follow-up appointment with your oral surgeon to monitor your healing progress and remove any stitches if needed. If you experience persistent bleeding, severe pain, or other concerning symptoms, contact our office immediately for further examination.
By following these wisdom tooth removal instructions, you can help ensure a smooth and successful recovery. Remember to be patient with yourself and allow your body the time it needs to heal properly. If you have any questions or need additional guidance, please feel free to reach out to our office. We are here to support you throughout your recovery journey.
