Multiple Extractions
Multiple Extractions Post-Operative Instructions
Having several teeth removed is a significant dental procedure requiring proper care and attention for a smooth and comfortable recovery. Please carefully review and follow these post-removal care instructions to promote healing and minimize complications.
Stopping Bleeding: Some bleeding is normal after multiple removals. To stop bleeding, gently bite down on clean gauze pads placed over each removal site for about 30 minutes. Replace the gauze pads as needed until bleeding slows. Avoid vigorous rinsing or spitting, as this can dislodge blood clots and prolong bleeding.
Managing Discomfort: You may feel discomfort or soreness after the numbing wears off. Take any prescribed pain medications as directed by your oral surgeon. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can also help relieve pain and reduce swelling. Avoid aspirin, as it can increase bleeding.
Reducing Swelling: Swelling is common after multiple removals and usually peaks within 48 hours. Apply an ice pack or cold compress to the cheeks or jawline for 20 minutes on, then 20 minutes off, to help reduce swelling and discomfort. Keep your head elevated while resting to further reduce swelling.
Dietary Guidelines: Stick to a soft or liquid diet for the first few days after surgery to avoid irritating the removal sites. Choose nutritious foods like soups, smoothies, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs. Avoid hot, spicy, or hard foods that may cause irritation or discomfort.
Maintaining Oral Cleanliness: Maintain good oral cleanliness to prevent infection and promote healing. Gently brush your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush, being careful to avoid the removal sites. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt dissolved in a cup of water) several times a day to keep the area clean and promote healing.
Rest and Limiting Activity: Rest as much as possible for the first few days after surgery to aid in the healing process. Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and bending over, as these activities can increase swelling and discomfort. Take it easy and allow your body time to recover.
Taking Medications: Take any prescribed medications as directed by your oral surgeon, including antibiotics if prescribed. If you experience nausea or vomiting after taking medication, contact your oral surgeon for further instructions.
Attending Follow-up Appointments: Attend your scheduled follow-up appointment with your oral surgeon to monitor your healing progress and ensure proper recovery. If you experience persistent bleeding, severe pain, swelling, or other concerning symptoms, contact our office immediately for further examination.
